  6.                                   QUICK START
  7.  
  8.              This section  is for  the LoanPmt  user who doesn't want to
  9.         initially wade  through all  the  program  documentation.    The
  10.         experienced PC  user will  find LoanPmt  very intuitive and thus
  11.         very easy  to learn  and use.  It is likely that most users will
  12.         only need  to read this section and use the on-line help (F1) to
  13.         become proficient using LoanPmt.

  15.              If you  will be  running the  program from  floppy disk, we
  16.         recommend copying  the program files LOANPMT.EXE and LOANPMT.OVR
  17.         to another  floppy disk.  Always run the program from a diskette
  18.         other than  the distribution  disk.  This preserves the original
  19.         files in case something goes wrong with the working copies.

  21.              If you will be using a hard drive, we recommend copying the
  22.         LoanPmt files  to a  directory named \LPMT, but any name of your
  23.         choice will  work.  If you are upgrading from a previous version
  24.         of LoanPmt,  you can  simply copy the new version over the older
  25.         version.   If you  want to  keep the  older version on your hard
  26.         disk you  must create  a new  directory to  install this version
  27.         into (i.e., \LPMT20, etc.).  If you need further help setting up
  28.         the program,  see the section titled "Installing LoanPmt" in the
  29.         manual.

  31.              Although LoanPmt  is a  DOS  application,  it  can  run  in
  32.         Microsoft Windows.   See  the section  titled "Using  LoanPmt in
  33.         Windows" for  instructions on  how to  setup LoanPmt  to run  in
  34.         Windows 3.x.

  36.              LoanPmt uses  program overlay  files.  Program overlay code
  37.         is loaded  into RAM  only when  it is  needed by  LoanPmt.   The
  38.         program uses  this technique  to conserve  precious RAM.    This
  39.         leaves  more  RAM  available  to  LoanPmt  for  such  things  as
  40.         displaying help  pages, amortization tables, and loan comparison
  41.         tables.   There is  one drawback to using program overlay files.
  42.         It substantially  degrades the  performance of the program if it
  43.         is running  from floppy  disk.  To offset this drawback, LoanPmt
  44.         can load  the overlay  files  into  expanded  memory  (EMS,  not
  45.         extended memory, XMS) whenever it is found.  There is NO program
  46.         degradation when  the overlay  files use  EMS.   Running LoanPmt
  47.         from  a   hard  disk   without  EMS   will  barely  degrade  its
  48.         performance.   See the section titled "Overlays and LOANPMT.OVR"
  49.         in the manual for more information.

  51.              To run  LoanPmt, LoanPmt's  drive  and  directory  must  be
  52.         selected or  they must  be in  the computer's  path.  At the DOS
  53.         prompt, type  LOANPMT and press ENTER.  The overlay manager will
  54.         initialize and the data entry screen will appear.

  56.              To exit the program and return to DOS, simply pull down the
  57.         Exit menu  and select  Yes.  This can be accomplished many ways.
  58.         The  easiest   way  is   to  press   the  "Alt"   and  "X"  keys
  59.         simultaneously to pull down the menu.  Then press the "Y" key to

  64.         select Yes.   If  you have  a mouse, left-click on "Exit" in the
  65.         menu bar, and then left-click on "Yes" in the pull-down menu.

  67.              Use the  ENTER, TAB,  SHIFT TAB,  UP ARROW,  and DOWN ARROW
  68.         keys to move between LoanPmt's data entry fields.  If you have a
  69.         mouse, you  also can  make your  selections by  left-clicking on
  70.         them.   Then, simply  enter the appropriate value in each field,
  71.         menu, etc.

  73.              Each LoanPmt  pull-down menu option and data field also can
  74.         be selected  by using  its hotkey.   Each  item's hotkey  is the
  75.         highlighted character  that appears  in its  name.    To  use  a
  76.         hotkey, press the Alt key and the hotkey simultaneously.

  78.              The currently selected compute field is highlighted and its
  79.         name is  displayed near  the upper  left  area  of  the  screen.
  80.         LoanPmt recomputes  and updates the selected field each time new
  81.         data is  entered at  any other  field.   To change  the computed
  82.         field, pull  down the  Settings menu by pressing Alt+G (or left-
  83.         click the  mouse on  "Settings").  Next, select "Computed field"
  84.         from the  pull-down menu,  and then  select  a new compute field
  85.         from the pop-up menu.

  87.              The loan data currently on the screen can be saved to disk.
  88.         To save loan data, pull down the File menu by pressing the "Alt"
  89.         and "I"  keys simultaneously  (or left-click  on "File" with the
  90.         mouse).   Next, select "Save" from the pull-down menu.  A dialog
  91.         box will appear to accept a filename for the data file.  LoanPmt
  92.         supplies its  own file  extension  of  ".PMT"  for  data  files.
  93.         (Note:  The F2 key is a short-cut key for saving loan data.)

  95.              Previously saved  loan data files can be reloaded.  To load
  96.         loan data, pull down the File menu by pressing the "Alt" and "I"
  97.         keys simultaneously  (or left-click  on "File"  with the mouse).
  98.         Next, select  "Load" from the pull-down menu.  A dialog box will
  99.         appear.   Key in a known filename or enter wildcards to access a
  100.         file selection menu.  A sample loan data file named EXAMPLE1.PMT
  101.         is on  the distribution  disk.   Place the  distribution disk in
  102.         drive A,  key in A:* in the dialog box, and press ENTER to see a
  103.         selection menu.   (NOTE:   The  F3 key  is a  short-cut key  for
  104.         loading loan data.)

  106.              Amortization tables  (or loan  payoffs, if  Payoff  is  the
  107.         computed field)  can be  displayed, printed,  or saved.    Press
  108.         Alt+L (or  left-click "Table"  with the  mouse) to pull down the
  109.         Table menu.   Then  select the type of output from the pull-down
  110.         menu.   Finally, enter  or select  the appropriate  items in the
  111.         resulting pop-up  menu.   Results saved to disk are ASCII (text)
  112.         files and can be edited and printed the same as any ASCII file.

  114.              Loan comparison tables can be displayed, printed, or saved.
  115.         A loan  comparison table's  initial values  are taken  from  the
  116.         currently  entered   loan  data.     Comparison  tables  can  be
  117.         constructed using  two different  methods.  One method shows the

  122.         incremental effects  of both  loan principal  and the  number of
  123.         payments.   The second  method shows  the incremental effects of
  124.         both loan principal and annual interest rate (APR).  To create a
  125.         loan comparison  table, press  Alt+A (or left-click the mouse on
  126.         "Comparisons") to  pull down  the Comparisons menu.  Next select
  127.         the comparison  method from  the pull-down  menu; principal  vs.
  128.         payments (or  years) or  principal vs.  APR.  In the next pop-up
  129.         dialog box,  enter the  incremental  values  for  the  two  loan
  130.         parameters displayed  and press ENTER (or double-click the mouse
  131.         in either  field).   From the  next pop-up  menu  select  either
  132.         display, print,  or save.  Depending on this selection, enter or
  133.         select the appropriate items in the resulting pop-up menu.

  135.              LoanPmt uses  the file LPMTINIT.PMT to initialize each time
  136.         it is started.  If the file is not found, LoanPmt initializes to
  137.         predefined defaults.  Since this file is a standard LoanPmt .PMT
  138.         file,  its  contents  can  be  edited  to  contain  user-defined
  139.         defaults.  Along with the loan data fields, currency symbol, and
  140.         the date  format are saved to the file.  To change its contents,
  141.         load it  and make  the changes  to LoanPmt's  screen you want as
  142.         your user-defined  defaults.  Finally re-save it as LPMTINIT and
  143.         answer "Yes" to overwrite the previous version of the file.
